Finn explains that he has a difficult bond with his spirit animal and that coming to Moon Tower had helped him. He convinces her to let him show her something and takes her to Moon Tower. Later, the group receives news that Zhong has fallen and that Meilin's father, General Teng, has gone missing. Tarik is skeptical of bringing Finn along but does not question it. Abeke recognizes Finn as the tattooed man she had seen in the cluttered room earlier. He introduces Finn, a senior Greencloak who would be their scout on the mission. Olvan enters the room, informing the group of their new mission in Eura. Conor is the only one to look ashamed and helps Abeke up, as she realizes that the other kids don't trust her, due to her previous time with the Conquerors. When Abeke is surrounded by the assistant Greencloaks, Tarik calls the fighting off and scolds the other kids for not helping Abeke. After that round, the kids are supposed to take a new weapon.

The story line and flavor don't suffer a bit for having been written by different authors.

This second book in the series will not make much sense to readers unless they have read or listened to the first book, Brandon Mull's Wild Born (Scholastic, 2013). The story ends with a cliff-hanger when he is blackmailed into giving up something in order to save his family. They barely have time to train before they're on a new journey, facing ambushes and an unexpected imprisonment in the town where Conor grew up.

In this second installment, they discover that a new and sinister way to create the bond between spirit animals and children has been developed, placing a grave threat in their path. Gr 3–7-Conor, Abeke, Meilin, and Rollan continue their quest to get the four talismen needed to defeat the devourer's minions.
